South Alabama and the Deep South Facing Over 5 Inches of Rain Through Next Thursday as Flooding Risk Builds Sunday Through Midweek

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA — The NWS Weather Prediction Center is forecasting a significant seven-day rainfall event across the Deep South through Thursday June 18, with parts of south Alabama projected to receive over five inches of rain as the highest coverage period runs from Sunday through the middle of next week and flooding concerns grow across the region.

South Alabama Bullseye Shows 5 to 6 Inch Rainfall Totals

The WPC seven-day precipitation forecast ending Thursday June 18 at 8PM EDT shows a concentrated rainfall bullseye across central and south Alabama with totals ranging from 5.3 to 5.9 inches. The highest values on the map are centered across a corridor stretching from central Alabama southward, with readings of 5.5 to 5.9 inches dominating the core zone.

Surrounding totals of 4.4 to 5.0 inches extend the heavy rainfall footprint across Mississippi and into portions of Louisiana, with the entire Deep South region from Louisiana through Alabama falling within the four-plus inch zone over the seven-day period.

Peak Rain Coverage Arrives Sunday Through Midweek

Forecasters are identifying Sunday through the middle of next week as the highest rain coverage period across the Deep South. That multi-day window of persistent rainfall is what drives the concern for flooding issues, as repeated rounds of heavy rain over the same areas can quickly saturate soils and overwhelm drainage systems across the region.

Mississippi is also in line for significant totals, with values of 4.3 to 5.7 inches forecast across eastern and central portions of the state through next Thursday.

Flooding Watch Needed Across Deep South Into Next Week

The combination of multi-day rainfall totals exceeding five inches and a peak coverage window running Sunday through Wednesday creates meaningful flash flooding and river flooding potential across south Alabama and adjacent areas of Mississippi and Louisiana.

Residents across the Deep South should monitor updated flood watches and warnings closely beginning this weekend and through the middle of next week as the heavy rain pattern develops.
