BILLINGS, MONTANA — Sunday night June 14 is shaping up to be one of the best stargazing nights of the year across the Intermountain West and Northern Plains, with a new moon producing zero percent illumination keeping skies completely dark from sunset to sunrise while a faint northern lights display adds bonus viewing potential as far south as Iowa and Nebraska.
Perfect Stargazing Conditions Across Nevada and the Intermountain West
The Ryan Hall stargazing outlook valid Sunday June 14 from 9PM to 5AM ET shows perfect sky conditions in orange concentrated across Nevada, inland California, and portions of the Great Basin. Excellent conditions in light blue extend across a broad corridor covering Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Colorado, and much of the Intermountain West region.
The complete absence of moonlight combined with the cleanest air mass sitting across the Intermountain West and Northern Plains from Nevada and inland California through Montana and the Dakotas creates an exceptional window for Milky Way viewing away from city lights Sunday night.
Faint Northern Lights Possible as Far South as Iowa and Nebraska
A faint aurora display is possible Sunday night with the best odds concentrated across the northern tier states. The northern lights could be visible to the naked eye as far south as roughly Iowa and Nebraska under dark sky conditions, while a camera pointed north could capture additional color down near the Chicago and Omaha latitudes.
Best aurora viewing odds remain across the northern states where both dark skies and geomagnetic visibility overlap most favorably Sunday night.
Gulf Coast and Southeast Socked In With Clouds and Humidity
The viewing outlook is considerably less favorable across the Gulf Coast and Southeast, where clouds and humidity are expected to obstruct sky conditions through the night. Fair to poor conditions cover much of the South, Tennessee Valley, and portions of the mid-Atlantic making stargazing difficult across those regions Sunday night.
Residents across Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas should find a dark location away from city lights Sunday evening for the best viewing experience of the year.
