Virginia, North Carolina, California, and the East Coast Baking in Dangerous Heat Today With Temperatures Reaching Triple Digits and 110s Across the Desert Southwest

WASHINGTON, DC — A coast-to-coast heat event is gripping the United States today Friday June 12, with dangerously hot temperatures forecast from the East Coast through the Desert Southwest and Central Valley of California as the NWS NDFD maximum temperature analysis shows widespread above-normal readings across a majority of the continental US.

East Coast Highs Soaring Into the 90s With Triple Digits in Virginia and North Carolina

Much of the East Coast is forecast to reach highs in the 90s this afternoon, with the most extreme readings concentrated from southern Virginia through North Carolina where temperatures are expected to climb into triple digits. The NWS NDFD map shows values of 97 to 101 degrees across the Virginia and North Carolina corridor, with readings of 93 to 99 degrees extending through the Carolinas and into the mid-Atlantic states.

New England and the Northeast are also running well above normal with highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s across the Boston and New York metropolitan areas.

Desert Southwest Hitting 107 Degrees as California Central Valley Reaches 106

The Desert Southwest remains locked in an intense heat pattern through the weekend, with highs pushing into the 107 degree range across Arizona and into the lower desert regions. The Central Valley of California is forecast to reach 106 degrees today, with 100 to 102 degree readings extending through much of inland California.

These Desert Southwest and Central Valley temperatures are expected to persist well into the weekend with little relief in sight through Sunday.

Pacific Northwest Watching Record Heat Build Into Sunday

Heat is forecast to build significantly across the Pacific Northwest through the weekend, with record high temperatures potentially reaching into the 80s and lower 90s by Sunday afternoon. That represents a dramatic warm-up for a region that typically sees much more moderate June temperatures and could push into record territory across portions of Oregon and Washington by the end of the weekend.

Residents across all impacted regions should limit outdoor exposure during peak afternoon heating hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members through the heat event.
