NORMAN, OKLAHOMA — The Storm Prediction Center has issued an updated Day 1 Categorical Outlook at 1620Z on May 27, 2026, placing a Slight Risk of severe weather across a corridor stretching from the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic region, with the outlook valid from 1630Z Wednesday May 27 through 1200Z Thursday May 28, 2026, as issued by forecasters Gleason and Lyons.
Slight Risk Zone Covers Virginia, Maryland and the Core Mid-Atlantic Corridor
The most significant designation on today’s national outlook is a yellow Slight Risk zone positioned across Virginia and Maryland, representing the only Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk area anywhere on the continental United States map today. This zone sits at the heart of the Ohio Valley into Mid-Atlantic threat corridor flagged in the 11:22 AM CDT SPC update and places millions of densely populated Mid-Atlantic residents within the organized severe weather threat footprint for today and tonight.
The Slight Risk designation indicates that scattered severe thunderstorms are expected within this zone, with damaging winds being the most likely hazard given the frontal boundary and humid air mass interaction driving today’s severe weather setup across the region.
Marginal Risk Zones Spread Across the Pacific Northwest, Iowa and the Central Plains
Beyond the primary Slight Risk zone in the Mid-Atlantic, several distinct Marginal Risk areas are outlined across other parts of the country on today’s SPC outlook. A large dark green Marginal zone covers portions of the Pacific Northwest extending into Idaho and Oregon, representing a separate convective threat area tied to different atmospheric dynamics in that region.
Additional Marginal Risk pockets are visible over Iowa and the upper Midwest, as well as two separate zones across the southern plains and Texas, indicating a broad national severe weather day with multiple isolated areas of organized convective potential outside the primary Mid-Atlantic focus.
Broad Thunderstorm Risk Covers Much of the Eastern and Central United States
A general thunderstorm risk area in light green shading covers the majority of the central and eastern United States on today’s outlook, stretching from the Gulf Coast northward through the Great Plains and into the Great Lakes region. This broad thunderstorm zone reflects the widespread atmospheric instability present across a large portion of the country as the active late May weather pattern continues.
Residents across Virginia, Maryland, and the broader Ohio Valley corridor should remain weather-aware through the evening hours and monitor local severe thunderstorm warnings as today’s Slight Risk setup evolves.
