Frequent Excessive Downpours and Flooding Risks Threatening Atlanta, New Orleans and Charlotte Through End of May 2026

ATLANTA, GEORGIA — Scattered heavy rain is expected to become a daily occurrence across the Deep South and Southeast United States through the end of May 2026, with BAM Weather’s Excessive Rain and Flooding Risk outlook identifying a multi-tiered threat zone where flooding concerns will run alongside much needed drought relief for the broader region.

Frequent Excessive Downpours and Flooding Risk Zone Centers Over Atlanta, New Orleans and Charlotte

The highest risk designation on the BAM Weather outlook through the end of May 2026 is the blue Frequent Excessive Downpours and Flooding Risks zone, which is centered directly over a corridor covering Atlanta, Georgia, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Charlotte, North Carolina. This is the most serious tier on the three-level risk scale and indicates that repeated rounds of excessive rainfall capable of producing flooding are expected to impact this corridor on a frequent basis through May 31.

The combination of multiple daily heavy rain events falling on the same areas repeatedly through the end of the month significantly elevates the cumulative flooding threat across this blue zone, particularly in low-lying areas, urban flood-prone corridors, and near rivers and streams already running at elevated levels.

Frequent Excessive Rain and Flooding Risk Covers Memphis, Houston and Dallas in Green Zone

Surrounding the highest risk blue core, a broad green zone indicating Frequent Excessive Rain and Flooding Risks extends across a much wider area of the South and Southeast. This zone encompasses Memphis, Tennessee, Houston, Texas, Dallas, Texas, and stretches eastward through much of the Gulf Coast and into the broader Southeast region.

While one tier below the most extreme blue designation, the green zone still represents a significant and ongoing flooding threat through the end of May as repeated rounds of heavy rainfall continue moving through the region on a daily basis.

Elevated Heavy Rain and Flooding Risk Reaches Tulsa and the Broader Southern Plains

The outermost tier on the BAM Weather outlook is the dark green Elevated Heavy Rain and Flooding Risks zone, which extends further west and north to include Tulsa, Oklahoma and portions of the broader southern plains. This zone reflects a lower but still meaningful flood risk as the overall wet pattern affecting the South influences conditions across a wider geographic footprint through May 31.

Residents across all three risk zones should monitor local flood watches and warnings daily and avoid flood-prone areas through the end of the month.
