BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — A 57-year-old Louisiana grandmother, Roxanne Record, is now facing a jury over the 2022 death of her 4-year-old granddaughter, China. Prosecutors say Record forced the young child to kneel and consume approximately half a pint of Canadian whiskey as punishment after the girl took a sip of the alcohol. The child later died from acute alcohol poisoning, according to the coroner.
What Prosecutors Say Happened
Prosecutors allege that Record forced little China to kneel and drink a large amount of Canadian whiskey as punishment after the child took a sip of it. The girl consumed roughly half a pint before later becoming unresponsive at the family’s Baton Rouge home.
Emergency crews responded to the residence on April 21, 2022, after China was found unresponsive. Despite emergency intervention, the child did not survive. The coroner confirmed the cause of death as acute alcohol poisoning.
Mother Was Present and Did Not Intervene
Authorities also claim that China’s mother was present and witnessed the entire incident but did not step in to stop it or protect her daughter at any point during the ordeal. That detail has added another deeply troubling dimension to an already devastating case that has shocked the Baton Rouge community.
How China Was Treated Inside the Home
In court, prosecutors painted a disturbing picture of how China was treated inside the household well beyond the fatal incident. They argued that the child was treated harshly on a regular basis and was even accused of stealing when she asked for basic necessities such as food or water.
The portrait prosecutors presented was one of a child living in conditions of fear and deprivation before her death at just four years old.
What the Defense Argues
The defense has pushed back against the murder charges, arguing that China’s death was a tragic accident rather than an intentional act. Defense attorneys urged jurors to carefully distinguish between grief and criminal intent, contending that Record did not set out to kill her granddaughter.
Roxanne Record now faces a jury that will determine whether the events of April 21, 2022 constitute murder or a devastating accident with criminal consequences. Stay with GordonRamsayClub.com for the latest updates.
