Heavy Rainfall Totals Up to 3.76 Inches Hit Northern Gulf and Southeast Areas on Friday and Saturday — South Florida Front to Bring More Rain Over Next Few Days

SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES — Rainfall totals across the Southeast for Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3, 2026, showed a highly uneven distribution across the region. Northern Gulf coastal areas recorded the heaviest accumulations, with some locations picking up between 2.68 and 3.76 inches over the two-day period. However, much of the broader Southeast received far lighter totals, not nearly enough to make any meaningful dent in ongoing drought conditions across the region.

Where the Heaviest Rain Fell

According to CoCoRaHS accumulated precipitation data covering May 2 to May 3, 2026, the Northern Gulf areas came out as the clear winners in terms of rainfall totals. Several locations along and near the Gulf Coast recorded between 2.68 and 3.76 inches, represented by red markers on the precipitation map, making them the highest totals recorded across the entire Southeast during this period.

Orange and yellow markers indicating totals between 1.59 and 2.67 inches were also concentrated heavily along the Northern Gulf corridor, while much of inland Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas received considerably lighter amounts ranging from trace levels up to 0.83 inches.

Florida Saw Widespread But Moderate Totals

Florida stood out on the rainfall map with widespread blue markers scattered across much of the peninsula, indicating totals generally ranging between 0.25 and 1.58 inches across a large number of reporting stations from Jacksonville down through Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota, and toward Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

While not exceptional, the Florida totals were more widespread and consistent compared to much of the rest of the Southeast, reflecting the lingering frontal boundary positioned near South Florida during this period.

Drought Relief Remains Elusive

Despite the decent totals recorded along the Gulf Coast, meteorologists were clear that the rainfall across most of the Southeast fell well short of what would be needed to make any meaningful impact on ongoing drought conditions. For the majority of the region, the weekend rainfall provided limited relief at best.

More Rain Expected for Southeast Side

A front lingering near South Florida over the next couple of days is expected to continue producing additional rainfall for the Southeast side of the region. The prolonged frontal boundary could bring some beneficial totals to areas that missed out on the heavier Friday and Saturday accumulations, though drought recovery across the broader region will require sustained and significant rainfall over an extended period.
