VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA — Officials in Virginia Beach are introducing a new weekend curfew for minors at the Oceanfront as the city responds to safety concerns following a recent shooting in the area.
The Virginia Beach City Council voted unanimously to approve a 7 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors, which will begin Friday and apply during weekend evenings at the city’s popular Oceanfront district. City leaders say the new rule is aimed at preventing violence and maintaining safety in one of the region’s busiest tourist destinations.
Curfew Will Run From 7 P.M. to 5 A.M.
Under the newly approved policy, the curfew will be in effect from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. every Friday and Saturday night. The rule will apply throughout the Oceanfront area through the end of April, targeting weekend nights when crowds are typically larger.
Officials say the measure specifically applies to unaccompanied minors, meaning anyone under the age of 18 who is not with a parent or guardian during those hours. The curfew is part of a broader effort by city leaders to reduce the risk of late-night incidents in the entertainment-heavy district.
Curfew Area Covers Major Oceanfront District
The curfew will apply to a defined section of the Oceanfront.
According to city officials, the restricted zone includes the area:
- North boundary: Rudee Park
- South boundary: 31st Street
- East boundary: Pacific Avenue
- West boundary: Atlantic Ocean
This stretch includes some of the most visited sections of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, where large numbers of tourists and residents gather on weekends.
City Leaders Say Measure Will Help Prevent Violence
Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate introduced the idea of the curfew during a special session earlier in the week. Officials say the curfew provides law enforcement with another tool to intervene before potential problems escalate.
“Now we have an additional tool to intervene before violence breaks out,” Neudigate explained while discussing the measure with city leaders. The curfew was approved unanimously by the council following the recent shooting that raised safety concerns in the area.
Police Emphasize Compliance Over Enforcement
Despite the new rule, police say they are not planning to immediately carry out mass arrests or detentions. Instead, officers say the primary goal is voluntary compliance from visitors and residents.
“We are looking for compliance,” Neudigate said, emphasizing that officers will focus on encouraging people to follow the rule rather than issuing widespread citations.
Oceanfront Remains a Major Tourist Destination
The Virginia Beach Oceanfront remains one of the most popular coastal attractions on the East Coast, drawing thousands of visitors each weekend. With restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels and beach access spread across the district, officials say the area can become crowded during peak tourism seasons.
City leaders hope the new curfew will help maintain safety while still allowing residents and tourists to enjoy the Oceanfront responsibly. As the new rule goes into effect this weekend, officials will closely monitor how the curfew impacts safety across the district in the coming weeks.
