UNITED STATES — A new grocery price analysis has revealed that Costco now ranks as the cheapest grocery store in the United States, beating out long-time budget leader Walmart and several other well-known supermarket chains.
According to findings reported by Consumer Reports, the wholesale retailer offered the lowest overall prices when researchers compared major grocery chains across the country.
The results surprised many shoppers who have long associated Walmart with the lowest everyday grocery prices.
Costco Tops National Grocery Price Comparison
The report compared prices at multiple grocery chains across the United States to determine where shoppers could save the most money.
Researchers found that Costco’s prices were about 21.4% lower than Walmart’s on average, making it the most affordable option in the study.
Several other chains also managed to undercut Walmart in the price comparison. The findings highlight how warehouse-style retailers and discount grocers are increasingly competing for budget-conscious shoppers.
Other Grocery Chains That Beat Walmart
While Costco ranked as the cheapest store overall, the study identified several additional chains that also offered lower prices than Walmart. According to the report, BJ’s Wholesale Club came in second with prices about 21% lower than Walmart.
Discount grocers Lidl and Aldi also ranked among the most affordable options, offering prices approximately 8.5% and 8.3% lower than Walmart.
Other retailers including WinCo and H-E-B also slightly edged out Walmart in the comparison. These findings suggest that shoppers willing to compare stores or shop at warehouse clubs may be able to significantly reduce their grocery bills.
Why Costco Prices May Be Lower
Costco operates under a membership-based warehouse model that allows the company to sell many products in bulk while keeping operating costs relatively low.
Because of this structure, the retailer can often offer lower prices on staple items compared with traditional grocery stores. Many Costco locations also focus on limited product selections and private-label goods, which can help reduce supply chain costs.
The strategy has helped the company maintain a reputation for competitive pricing even as food costs across the United States have risen.
Price Differences Vary by Metro Area
Consumer Reports also found that Costco had the lowest grocery prices in several metro areas across the country, reinforcing its strong performance nationwide.
However, researchers noted that price differences can vary depending on the city, store location, and specific items shoppers buy. Still, the results suggest that Costco continues to outperform many major grocery competitors when it comes to overall affordability.
For shoppers across the United States looking for ways to stretch their grocery budgets, the report provides new insight into where the biggest savings may be found. For more breaking stories and updates, visit GordonRamsayClub.com.
