NORTH PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND — A 69-year-old Lincoln woman has died after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening in North Providence, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Police say the victim, Susan Biggins of Lincoln, was seriously injured when she was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Garfield Street and Mineral Spring Avenue around 4:45 p.m. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a pedestrian struck in the roadway.
Biggins was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she later died from the injuries she suffered in the crash.
Crash Reported Near Busy North Providence Intersection
According to police, officers arrived at the scene after multiple reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near Garfield Street and Mineral Spring Avenue.
When emergency crews arrived, they found Biggins suffering from serious injuries in the roadway. Paramedics quickly transported her to Rhode Island Hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the immediate moments leading up to the collision.
Investigation Into How the Collision Happened
Investigators say a 21-year-old driver was operating the vehicle involved in the crash. According to preliminary findings and surveillance footage from the area, Biggins may have fallen into the roadway shortly before the collision occurred.
Police say the driver reportedly did not see her lying in the street before the vehicle struck her. Officials confirmed the driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators as they work to determine exactly what happened.
At this time, no criminal charges have been filed. However, authorities are seeking a search warrant for the driver’s phone to verify that the device was not being used at the time of the crash.
Snowbanks and Winter Conditions in the Area
While large snowbanks remain across parts of North Providence following a recent blizzard, investigators say snow-covered sidewalks or snowbanks do not appear to have directly contributed to the crash.
However, officials noted that some areas of the city still have snowbanks more than four feet high, and several sidewalks remain unshoveled. These conditions can make it more difficult for pedestrians to safely navigate neighborhoods during winter months.
City officials are reminding residents that property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their homes or businesses to help keep pedestrians safe.
