CLEVELAND, OHIO — A 15-year-old girl is being credited with saving her mother’s life after performing CPR during a sudden cardiac arrest at their home, using life-saving techniques she had learned during earlier training.
The dramatic rescue unfolded in March 2025 when the teenager’s quick thinking and immediate action helped keep her mother alive until emergency medical crews arrived.
Teen Quickly Acts When Her Mother Collapses
The teen, Mahogany Milton, was at home when her mother, B’Lon Calloway, 42, collapsed shortly after returning from work.
Calloway went into cardiac arrest, a life-threatening condition in which the heart suddenly stops beating effectively, cutting off blood flow to the brain and vital organs.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Mahogany immediately called 911 and began performing CPR when she realized her mother was not breathing and had no pulse. Her quick response proved critical during the medical emergency.
CPR Training Proved Life-Saving
Mahogany had previously learned CPR through the American Heart Association’s STEM Goes Red program, which she attended in 2023. The skills she learned during that training prepared her to act during the emergency at home.
While on the phone with emergency dispatchers, she continued performing chest compressions until paramedics arrived and took over lifesaving efforts.
Medical professionals often emphasize that immediate CPR can dramatically increase survival chances during cardiac arrest by maintaining blood flow until advanced care arrives.
Doctors Discover Severe Heart Blockage
After paramedics transported Calloway to University Hospitals, doctors discovered a severe blockage in her heart. Physicians treated the blockage by inserting a stent, a small medical device used to keep arteries open and restore proper blood flow.
Calloway remained hospitalized for approximately one week while recovering from the cardiac event and the procedure. Doctors later noted that survival and full recovery after cardiac arrest are relatively rare, making the outcome especially remarkable.
Mother and Daughter Share Their Story
Following the frightening experience, Calloway and her daughter later spoke publicly about the incident to highlight the importance of CPR training. They shared their story during a local American Heart Association event, encouraging others to learn basic lifesaving skills.
Mahogany described the moment as emotional and frightening, recalling how urgently she hoped her mother would survive. Calloway expressed gratitude for her daughter’s quick response, saying she believes her life was saved because Mahogany acted immediately when the emergency happened.
Their story has since become an example of how CPR education can make a life-saving difference during sudden medical emergencies. If you have experiences with CPR training or stories about lifesaving moments like this one, share your thoughts and join the discussion at GordonRamsayClub.com.
