ARIZONA — A 35-year-old man who admitted to randomly shooting an 18-year-old honor student as he walked home from work has been sentenced to 49 years in prison, bringing a painful chapter of the 2020 killing to a close.
Authorities identified the defendant as Timothy Bell, who pleaded guilty in connection with the death of Tyler Cardiel.
Shooting of Teen Leaving Work
According to reports, Tyler Cardiel had just finished an overnight shift at a Circle K and was walking home when he encountered Bell.
Investigators said Bell later told detectives he was angry, cold, and tired of sleeping on the streets and decided he wanted to kill the first person he saw.
Cardiel, described as an honor student who had graduated from high school less than a year earlier, became the victim of that random act of violence.
Arrest and Guilty Plea
Authorities said Bell was later found at a hospital being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
During the investigation, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, robbery, and weapons misconduct.
The case moved through the court system over the past several years before sentencing was handed down.
Sentencing Details
On February 27, Bell was sentenced to 25 years for the murder, 14 years for robbery, and 10 years for weapons misconduct.
All sentences will run consecutively, totaling 49 years behind bars.
Family Describes “Senseless Act”
Cardiel’s family described the killing as a senseless act that took the life of a young man who had never been in trouble.
The loss devastated loved ones who say Tyler had a bright future ahead of him after recently graduating and working hard to build his life.
Authorities have not released additional comments following the sentencing, but the court’s decision ensures Bell will spend decades in prison for the fatal shooting.
