Illinois, Missouri, Indiana Brace for Strong to Severe Storms This Morning Into Afternoon With Damaging Winds, Hail, Isolated Tornado Risk as Instability Builds

ST. LOUIS, MO. — As storms push in from the west this morning, Sunday, June 21, a few strong to severe storms will be possible through the morning and into the afternoon across Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana, with instability building in along and ahead of an approaching line currently tracking near the Quad Cities and Burlington.

Storms Pushing in From the West This Morning

Storms are pushing in from the west this morning, with current radar showing an active line stretching from the Quad Cities and Burlington down through Quincy, Columbia, and Jefferson City as of 10 a.m. EDT and 9 a.m. CDT. This line is expected to track east through the morning and into the afternoon.

Damaging Winds and Hail the Main Concerns

The main concerns with this round of storms are damaging winds and hail as the system tracks through Illinois, Missouri, and into Indiana. Forecasters say building instability ahead of the line, especially across central and southern Illinois near Springfield and Carbondale, will help fuel the strongest storms.

Isolated Tornado Cannot Be Ruled Out

While damaging winds and hail remain the primary threats, forecasters note that an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out as storms move through the highlighted corridor stretching from St. Louis and Alton through Carbondale and Paducah.

Instability Building In Ahead of the Line

A zone of building instability is highlighted stretching from central Illinois near Springfield and Bloomington down through St. Louis, Carbondale, and into western Kentucky near Paducah. This developing instability is expected to support stronger storms as the system continues pushing east through Indiana toward Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Louisville later in the day.
