NORTH CAROLINA — A warm and largely pleasant Mother’s Day is in store for North Carolina on Sunday, May 10, 2026, with high temperatures climbing into the 70s and 80s across most of the state. Partly sunny skies will dominate across the interior, with more clouds expected along the coast and in eastern portions of the state through early afternoon. A couple of isolated showers are possible along the coast this morning into early afternoon, while the rest of the state should remain quiet throughout the day.
Temperature Breakdown Across North Carolina
Sunday’s high temperature map from North Carolina’s Weather Authority shows a clear warming trend across the entire state with temperatures ranging from the low 70s in the western mountains up to the upper 80s across central and southeastern communities.
Western mountain communities will see the coolest readings, with Murphy and Highlands at 71 degrees, Cashiers at 73, Brevard at 73, Banner Elk at 74, and Boone reaching 73 degrees. Communities along the foothills and Piedmont warm considerably, with Asheville reaching 80, Charlotte climbing to 86, Statesville hitting 84, and Greensboro reaching 84 degrees on Sunday afternoon.
Central North Carolina sees some of the warmest readings statewide, with Raleigh reaching 85 degrees, Durham at 84, Sanford at 86, and Fayetteville climbing to 86 degrees. Pinehurst and Troy both reach 87 degrees, making the Sandhills region one of the warmest spots in the state on Sunday.
Coastal Areas Stay Cloudier and Cooler
The coast and eastern portions of North Carolina will see more cloud cover throughout the morning and into early afternoon compared to interior areas. Temperatures along the Outer Banks and immediate coast will be cooler, with Hatteras at 77, Ocracoke at 77, Manteo at 74, and Morehead City reaching 76 degrees as the marine influence keeps coastal readings more suppressed than the warmer inland communities.
A couple of isolated showers are possible along the coast this morning into early afternoon, but coverage will be limited and most coastal residents should see only brief and passing shower activity before conditions improve later in the day.
Wind and General Conditions
South winds at 10 to 15 mph will be present across North Carolina throughout Sunday, adding a pleasant warm breeze to what is otherwise a comfortable and seasonable Mother’s Day across the state. The combination of partly sunny skies, warm temperatures, and light southerly winds creates ideal conditions for outdoor Mother’s Day celebrations across most of interior North Carolina throughout the afternoon hours.
