FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA — The ECMWF model initialized at 12z June 14 is showing an extraordinary instability signal valid at 00z Saturday June 27, with the most unstable CAPE forecast reaching a maximum of 9,171 J/kg centered over a black and white bullseye spanning North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
ECMWF Long Range Run Shows Off the Charts CAPE Values
The ECMWF 0.1 degree model run valid Hour 300 at 00z Saturday June 27 shows a black and white core of extreme CAPE values exceeding 7,000 to over 9,000 J/kg centered over North Dakota and extending into South Dakota and western Minnesota. Individual point values within this core range from 6,300 to as high as 8,520 J/kg, with the model maximum reaching 9,171 J/kg.
Surrounding this extreme core, purple shading indicating 4,000 to 6,000 J/kg wraps across a broader zone covering Minnesota, Iowa, and into Wisconsin, with red shading in the 3,000 to 4,000 J/kg range extending the elevated instability footprint further south and east.
Two Week Range Forecast Carries Significant Uncertainty
This forecast is valid 13 days from the model initialization time, placing it well beyond the range where specific details can be considered reliable. Long range model output at this distance frequently shifts substantially as the event approaches, and CAPE values of this extreme magnitude this far out should be treated as a signal of an unusually unstable pattern rather than a precise forecast.
That said, values approaching or exceeding 9,000 J/kg would represent an exceptionally rare atmospheric setup if they were to materialize anywhere close to this magnitude when the date arrives.
North Dakota South Dakota and Minnesota Worth Monitoring as Date Approaches
Given the extreme nature of this long range signal, residents across North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota should keep an eye on forecast trends as late June approaches. Severe weather outlooks will become far more reliable inside the seven day range, and any signal of unusual instability persisting into that window would warrant closer attention.
