WICHITA, KAN. — A Level 2 of 5 severe risk arrives Tuesday, June 23, across eastern Colorado, western Kansas, and northern Oklahoma, with storms building off the high ground as lone cells during the afternoon hours bringing very large hail before consolidating into one damaging wind producing line that shoves south into Kansas and northern Oklahoma overnight.
Lone Cells Fire Off High Ground With Very Large Hail
Storms are expected to build off the high ground during the afternoon as lone discrete cells, and that is when the very large hail threat is at its peak. Isolated supercell mode allows individual storms to grow extremely tall and produce oversized hail before any upscale growth begins. Residents with vehicles outside across eastern Colorado and western Kansas are urged to get them under cover before the afternoon storms fire up.
Storms Clump Into Line By Evening Bringing Damaging Winds
Later in the evening, the discrete cells are expected to congeal into one line that shoves south into Kansas and possibly northern Oklahoma. As this transition occurs, damaging wind becomes the bigger and more widespread threat, with gusts capable of downing trees and power lines as the line accelerates south through the overnight hours.
Level 2 Risk Centered Over Denver Through Wichita Corridor
The Level 2 of 5 risk is centered over a corridor stretching from Denver through Wichita and into northern Oklahoma, including Tulsa and Oklahoma City. A broader Level 1 risk extends outward from this core zone northward through Nebraska, the Dakotas, and into Minnesota, while also stretching east toward Kansas City, Columbia, and Springfield.
Residents Urged to Act Before Afternoon Storms Develop
With the hail threat arriving during the afternoon hours when storms are at their most discrete and intense, forecasters are urging residents across the risk zone to take protective action for vehicles and property well before storms develop. The threat window runs from the afternoon through the overnight hours as the storm mode transitions from supercells to a damaging wind producing line.
