SPRINGFIELD, ILL. — Illinois leads the nation in tornado reports in 2026 by a staggering margin, with 196 confirmed reports as of June 22, more than double the second place state, while the national tornado report count has now exceeded 1,030 for the year with 40 possible EF2 or stronger tornadoes already on the books.
Illinois Leads by a Staggering Margin
Illinois sits at the top of the 2026 tornado report leaderboard with 196 reports, far ahead of second place Mississippi at 83. The gap between Illinois and the rest of the nation reflects just how relentlessly active the severe weather pattern has been across the state through the first half of 2026.
Mississippi, Missouri, Indiana, Iowa Round Out Top Five
Mississippi sits second with 83 tornado reports, followed by Missouri with 76, Indiana with 70, and Iowa with 64 rounding out the top five most tornado impacted states so far in 2026. Indiana has already surpassed its entire 2025 annual total of 64 tornado reports with months still remaining in the active season.
National Count Exceeds 1030 With More Severe Weather Ahead
The national tornado report count has now exceeded 1,030 for the year, a significant milestone with the severe weather season still in full swing. Of those reports, 40 have been flagged as possible EF2 or stronger tornadoes, reflecting the intensity of some of the outbreaks that have hit the Midwest this year.
More Storm Clusters Favored in Coming Weeks
Additional storm clusters are favored in the coming weeks that can bring more rounds of severe weather across many of the same states already hit hard this year. With Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri already well above historical norms, forecasters say the active pattern shows no signs of slowing down heading into July.
