SOUTH CAROLINA — A tragic case that shocked a community has reached its legal conclusion after a man admitted to carrying out a random shooting that killed a young child traveling with his family.
A South Carolina judge sentenced 40-year-old Charles Montgomery Allen to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to the fatal shooting of 8-year-old Quarius Dunham, along with multiple counts of attempted murder connected to the same incident.
Authorities said the deadly shooting occurred when Allen began firing at passing vehicles outside his home, turning what should have been an ordinary drive into a devastating tragedy for one family.
Random Gunfire Strikes Family’s Vehicle
Investigators determined that Allen was standing outside his residence when he began randomly shooting at vehicles driving by. According to officials, he used both a rifle and a shotgun during the attack. One of the vehicles targeted was carrying Quarius Dunham and his family, who were visiting the state at the time of the incident.
During the shooting, a bullet struck the young boy in the neck, causing critical injuries. Emergency responders rushed the child for medical treatment, but despite efforts to save him, Quarius later died after being taken off life support, authorities said.
Additional Victims Survived the Attack

Authorities further determined that Allen fired at two additional cars, including one being driven by the boy’s father. The father was also injured in the shooting but survived, according to investigators.

In court proceedings, Allen pleaded guilty to murder and five counts of attempted murder, bringing the case to a conclusion without a full trial. A judge ultimately handed down a life sentence for the murder of Quarius Dunham, along with 30-year prison sentences for each attempted murder conviction, reflecting the severity of the attack.
Officials said the evidence demonstrated that the shooting was not directed at specific individuals but instead involved indiscriminate gunfire at passing vehicles, making the incident especially alarming.
