TROY, MICHIGAN — Powerful winds sweeping across Metro Detroit caused dramatic damage in Troy on Friday after a large gas station canopy collapsed at a Shell station near the intersection of East Long Lake Road and Dequindre Road.
The structure covering the gas pumps was torn apart as intense gusts moved through the region under a High Wind Warning issued by the National Weather Service. Images from the scene show the massive canopy twisted and collapsed over the fueling area, leaving debris scattered around the station.
Strong Wind Gusts Slam Metro Detroit
The collapse happened as powerful winds moved across Southeast Michigan throughout the day. According to reports, wind gusts across the region reached between 50 and 60 miles per hour, with forecasters warning that stronger gusts could continue into the evening hours.
Those winds were strong enough to damage structures, knock down trees and cause scattered power outages across the Metro Detroit area. The Shell gas station canopy in Troy appears to have been one of the most visible examples of the storm’s impact.
Gas Station Canopy Collapses Over Pump Area
The large overhead structure designed to shelter gas pumps was ripped from its supports and collapsed onto the station’s fueling area. Photographs show the canopy leaning heavily across the pump island while parts of the metal frame appear bent and broken.
Debris from the structure was scattered across the pavement as emergency tape and cones were placed around the damaged area. It remains unclear whether anyone was present at the pumps when the collapse occurred.
High Wind Warning Issued by National Weather Service
The damage occurred while the region remained under a High Wind Warning, with meteorologists warning residents about dangerous gusts capable of causing structural damage.
Strong winds moving through Michigan have already resulted in multiple reports of storm-related problems. Authorities across the region have reported downed trees, damaged structures and power outages as the system pushed through Southeast Michigan.
Officials Urge Residents to Use Caution
Weather officials are urging residents to remain cautious while the powerful winds continue across the area. Drivers are being warned about debris on roadways and the possibility of falling tree limbs or damaged structures. The National Weather Service advises residents to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind conditions.
As the storm continues to move through the region, officials say crews will assess the full extent of the damage caused by the powerful winds in Troy and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. For more breaking stories and updates, visit GordonRamsayClub.com.
