Days later, the grateful mother honored one of the officers in a deeply personal way — by giving her newborn the officer’s name.
The mother, Kashanna Legette, went into labor while trying to make it to the hospital, but the baby had other plans. As contractions intensified, nearby New York police officers quickly stepped in to help guide her through the emergency delivery. Thanks to their assistance, the baby was safely delivered before reaching the hospital.
Police Officers Step In During Unexpected Delivery
According to the officers involved, assisting with a childbirth was something they had learned about during training but rarely expected to face in real life.
Officer Keanu Phillip said that during training at the police academy they were shown instructional videos about helping with childbirth but were told such situations were uncommon. That training suddenly became real when they responded to the situation involving Legette.
Officers quickly assessed the situation as the contractions became stronger, realizing the baby would arrive before the mother could reach medical care.
Officers Help Guide the Mother Through Labor
Officer Katerin Villar said she immediately began asking the mother how far apart her contractions were. That information helped the officers realize the baby’s arrival was imminent.
“I asked to see how far apart mom’s contractions were and that’s when I knew the baby was coming,” Villar explained.
During the delivery, officers stayed close to the mother, helping keep her calm and focused. Legette later recalled that one officer held her hand while others reminded her to breathe, guiding her through the intense moments of labor.
Emotional Reunion With the Officers
A few days after the birth, Legette returned with her newborn to meet the officers who had helped bring her child into the world. The reunion was filled with smiles, gratitude, and an emotional thank-you from the mother.

A Special Name to Honor the Officer

That gesture moved Legette so deeply that she decided to honor him in a permanent way. She chose Remy as her daughter’s middle name.
Legette later explained that the officer did not have to do any of what he did that day, which made his actions even more meaningful. “Because he didn’t have to do none of that. So for him to do that, that was beautiful,” she said.

For Officer Phillip, the experience was especially meaningful because he is soon to become a father himself. He said he simply tried to imagine what he would do if the situation involved someone he loved.
“I put myself in the position of what if that was my wife,” he said, explaining that he focused on keeping the mother calm and guiding her through the moment.
