SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — Multiple southbound lanes of Interstate 805 were shut down early Tuesday after a semi-truck caught fire in the Mission Valley area, creating significant traffic disruptions during the morning commute.
The fire was reported at approximately 6:10 a.m. on I-805 near the Interstate 8 freeway interchange, just south of Murray Ridge Road, according to authorities.
Fire Breaks Out During Morning Commute
Emergency crews responded quickly after the semi-truck became engulfed in flames along the busy stretch of freeway.
Aerial footage from the scene showed heavy smoke rising from the tractor-trailer as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Officials did not immediately release information regarding injuries or the cause of the fire.
All Southbound Lanes Temporarily Closed
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that all southbound lanes of I-805 in the affected area were closed and were expected to remain shut down until at least midday.
The closure created heavy congestion in Mission Valley and surrounding corridors as drivers were forced to seek alternate routes.
Authorities advised motorists traveling southbound to divert to State Route 163 (SR-163) to avoid the impacted stretch of freeway.
Traffic Impact Across Mission Valley
The I-805 and I-8 interchange is one of the region’s most heavily traveled freeway junctions, especially during peak commute hours.
With all southbound lanes temporarily blocked, traffic delays quickly spread through nearby surface streets and connecting highways.
Drivers were urged to allow extra travel time and monitor traffic updates as crews continued cleanup and safety inspections.
Investigation and Cleanup Ongoing
Officials have not yet disclosed what caused the semi-truck to ignite or whether mechanical failure or other factors were involved.
Emergency responders remained on scene to extinguish remaining hotspots and assess roadway conditions before reopening lanes.
This remains a developing situation, and further updates are expected as authorities complete their investigation.
