DETROIT, MICHIGAN — Three teens have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Detroit, an incident that unfolded in front of police officers and led to a short pursuit and crash.
Shooting Occurred Near Prest and Margareta Streets
According to investigators, the shooting happened around 9:59 p.m. on March 30, 2026, near Prest Street and Margareta Street. Authorities say officers were already in the area when a stolen black vehicle pulled up next to the victim’s car and opened fire.
The victim, identified as David Gary Martin Jr., 20, attempted to drive away but crashed into a home in the 18400 block of Sussex Street. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Suspects Identified and Charged
Officials have charged three Detroit teens in the case:
- Keyonte Johnson, 17
- Taiwan Nathaniel Robinson, 18
- Tadario Thomas Derwin Sims, 18
All three are facing serious charges related to the homicide.
Johnson and Sims are each charged with:
- First-degree premeditated murder
- Felony firearm
- Carrying a concealed weapon
Robinson faces:
- First-degree premeditated murder
- Felony firearm
- Third-degree fleeing
Police Chase Ends With Crash and Arrests
After the shooting, the suspects fled in the stolen vehicle. Officers, along with Michigan State Police, located the vehicle about 14 minutes later, leading to a chase.
The pursuit ended in the area of 8 Mile and Southfield, where the suspects crashed into a state trooper’s vehicle before being taken into custody.
Evidence Recovered From Vehicle
Investigators recovered multiple firearms from the vehicle:
- A weapon reportedly fell from Johnson’s lap as he exited the car
- A second firearm was found near the front passenger seat
Authorities say both weapons preliminarily matched evidence from the shooting scene, including shell casings.
Additional Details From Investigation
Prosecutors identified Robinson as the driver during the incident. They also noted that he was on tether at the time, and location data placed him at the scene of the shooting.
Sims was seated in the front passenger seat, where one of the firearms was located. Robinson is also facing a separate case tied to an armed robbery, carjacking, and non-fatal shooting on March 27, 2026, alongside another individual.
Court Proceedings Underway
All three suspects have been arraigned in 36th District Court and are currently being held in jail as the case moves forward.
