CLEVELAND, OHIO — A Cleveland woman has been arrested and charged with murder after investigators discovered the bodies of her two young daughters buried in suitcases in a field near a city school, a case that has shocked the South Collinwood neighborhood.
Police say 28-year-old Aliyah Henderson was taken into custody Wednesday evening and booked into the Cuyahoga County Jail following a homicide investigation that began earlier in the week.
The arrest comes days after authorities found the remains of two girls hidden in shallow graves inside suitcases in a field near Ginn Academy in Cleveland’s South Collinwood area.
Suitcases With Remains Found Near School Field
Investigators first discovered the remains Monday after responding to reports in the area near Ginn Academy. Police said the bodies of two young girls were found inside suitcases that had been buried in shallow graves in a nearby field.
At the time of the discovery, authorities had not yet confirmed the identities of the victims but believed the girls were between 8 and 14 years old. Officials also indicated early evidence suggested the two victims were related.
Victims Identified as Sisters
Further investigation, including DNA testing, later confirmed that the victims were related and likely half-siblings. Authorities have now identified the girls as 8-year-old Mila Chatman and 10-year-old Amor Wilson.
Investigators say both girls were daughters of the woman now charged in the case. The discovery of the victims’ identities added another devastating layer to a case that has drawn widespread attention across Cleveland.
Arrest Made After Search of Nearby Home
Police say the investigation eventually led detectives to a home located directly across the street from the field where the suitcases were discovered.
Authorities served a search warrant at the residence and identified a suspect during the search. Cleveland Police Sgt. Freddy Diaz said investigators had been working around the clock on the case.
“Part of the investigation led us to this home. It’s been a nonstop, ongoing investigation. Our homicide unit has been working around the clock,” Diaz said. Following the search, Henderson was taken into custody and charged with murder and child endangering.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Authorities say the investigation remains active as detectives continue to gather evidence. Officials have not yet released details about the exact cause of death or how long the girls may have been buried in the area before their bodies were discovered.
Police say additional information may become available as the investigation progresses.
