CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — A 28-year-old man who was working two jobs to support his family was found dead early Monday morning after completing what his family says was supposed to be his final Uber Eats delivery of the night.
Daniel Figueroa had just finished a shift at Amazon on Sunday before beginning a late-night run as an Uber Eats driver. Around 2 a.m., he dropped off a food order at Loretto Hospital on Chicago’s West Side.
Moments later, he was discovered unresponsive outside the hospital — and his van was gone.
Found Unresponsive After Delivery
According to police, the customer who placed the order — a doctor at Loretto Hospital — was able to track Figueroa’s movements through the Uber Eats app as he approached the hospital.
When the doctor went outside to retrieve the order, he reportedly found Figueroa lying on the ground.
Figueroa was transported to another hospital, where he later died. Authorities are investigating his death as a homicide.
Possible Carjacking Caught on Camera
Police said surveillance footage showed Figueroa attempting to stop three individuals — reportedly two men and a woman — from taking his van.
Investigators allege he was dragged for approximately half a block before the vehicle sped away.
On Tuesday, police confirmed that a person of interest was in custody, though no formal charges have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.
“This Was Going to Be His Last Stop”
Figueroa’s father told local media that his son’s delivery to Loretto Hospital was meant to be his final drop-off before heading home.
“He was on his way home. This was going to be his last stop,” his father said.
Figueroa’s girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, said the couple had planned to celebrate her young son’s birthday later that day. She described Figueroa as the primary financial provider for their household and someone who treated her son as his own.
A GoFundMe page established to help cover funeral expenses describes him as a devoted partner and provider who worked tirelessly to support his family.
Community Mourning as Investigation Continues
Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death. Both Loretto Hospital and Uber have stated they are cooperating with law enforcement as detectives continue to gather evidence.
The killing has reignited concerns about the safety of delivery drivers working late-night shifts across Chicago.
