Bedford AutoZone Shooting: 22-Year-Old Sentenced to 10–15 Years After Girlfriend’s Death, Says He “Got Scared” During Dispute

BEDFORD — A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison in connection with the fatal shooting of his 20-year-old girlfriend outside a local AutoZone, a case that has drawn emotional courtroom testimony and renewed scrutiny over how the confrontation unfolded.

Darrien Hobley previously entered a guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the death of Riley Jones.

Guilty Plea and Courtroom Statement

On February 2, Hobley formally pleaded guilty to the charges. During sentencing proceedings, he addressed the court directly, offering his own account of the events that led to Jones’ death.

According to Hobley, the couple was outside the AutoZone when an argument occurred. He claimed Riley reached for his weapon during the dispute and that he became frightened, firing the gun and striking her in the chest.

However, after the shooting, Hobley did not remain at the scene to render aid. Court records indicate he went inside the store and told someone to call 911 before leaving the area.

Surveillance Footage and Disputed Details

During sentencing, the judge referenced surveillance footage that reportedly captured parts of the confrontation. The footage allegedly showed a possible argument between the two before shots were fired.

According to statements presented in court, Hobley arrived at the location with Jones following in a separate vehicle. She reportedly exited her car, approached his vehicle, and moments later gunshots were heard, with Jones collapsing to the ground.

The prosecution’s version of events differed in key details from Hobley’s account, which he maintained during his emotional statement.

Family’s Emotional Impact

Riley Jones’ family addressed the court during sentencing. Her sister spoke about the betrayal and heartbreak felt by loved ones.

“She lost her life to someone she trusted,” her sister said, describing the lasting emotional toll on the family.

The judge ultimately sentenced Hobley to a prison term of 10 to 15 years.

Case Concludes With Sentencing

With the guilty plea entered and sentencing complete, the case now moves into the correctional phase of the judicial process. Hobley will serve his sentence under the terms ordered by the court.

As with all cases, sentencing decisions are based on charges admitted or proven in court proceedings.

The Bedford community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the shooting, as the family of Riley Jones mourns her loss and reflects on the tragic events outside the AutoZone that night.
