DETROIT, MICHIGAN — A tragic chain-reaction crash on Interstate 96 in Detroit has left a 34-year-old driver dead after a series of collisions involving multiple vehicles, including a semi truck, unfolded Sunday night.
According to Michigan State Police, the crash occurred around 8:50 p.m. near Warren Avenue, beginning with a merging incident that quickly escalated into a deadly sequence of events.
Initial Crash During Highway Merge
Investigators say the 34-year-old man was driving a Hyundai and attempting to merge onto I-96 from I-94 when he struck the side of a semi truck.
Following the impact, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a concrete wall, leaving the car disabled and partially blocking the left lane of the highway.
Good Samaritan Stops to Help Children
As the damaged vehicle sat in the roadway, a passing driver stopped to assist and successfully removed two young children, ages 4 and 8, from the car.
The quick actions of the bystander ensured the children were taken out of immediate danger before the situation worsened.
Second Crash Triggers Chain Reaction
Moments later, a Dodge Ram traveling in the left lane collided with the disabled Hyundai, then struck the same semi truck involved in the initial crash.
The force of the second impact caused the Hyundai to spin out of control, eventually striking the vehicle of the driver who had stopped to help.
Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome
Troopers performed CPR on the Hyundai driver at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital. Despite emergency efforts, the man was later pronounced dead.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities say the crash remains under active investigation as they work to determine all contributing factors, including speed, visibility, and roadway conditions. The incident highlights the dangers of highway merging and the risks posed when vehicles become disabled in active lanes of traffic.
