Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska Face Enhanced Risk Today as Supercells Bring Tornadoes, Very Large Hail, Damaging Winds

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. — Supercells are possible across the central Plains today, June 20, where the Storm Prediction Center has outlined an Enhanced Risk, level 3 of 5, stretching from southeast Wyoming and northeast Colorado into Kansas, with all hazards on the table including a few tornadoes and very large hail.

Initial Supercells to Develop on Higher Terrain

Storms should initially develop on the higher terrain of southeast Wyoming and northeast Colorado, moving east and southeast with time into richer low level moisture. A subtle shortwave with enhanced flow aloft is expected to approach the central High Plains this afternoon, helping spark this initial round.

Rich Moisture Advecting Around Deepening Lee Cyclone

Regionally rich low level moisture will advect northward into the region around a deepening lee cyclone in eastern Colorado. This moisture surge is what allows the all hazards threat, including very large hail and a few tornadoes, to materialize as storms move east of the higher terrain.

Additional Supercells Possible Along Warm Front

Additional supercells and clusters carrying the same all hazards risk are possible along and north of a lifting warm front, stretching across southern Nebraska and northern Kansas. Cities including North Platte, Kearney, McCook, Hays, and Salina fall within this corridor of concern.

Upscale Growth Expected to Bring Damaging Wind Threat

Eventually, upscale growth is expected to lead to a continuing damaging wind threat along with the potential for embedded tornadoes as storms grow upscale into clusters or a line later in the day. The Enhanced Risk area covers a broad stretch from the Nebraska Panhandle through central Nebraska and into central and south central Kansas, including Wichita, Salina, and Garden City.

Residents across Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas are urged to stay weather aware throughout the day as this multi hazard severe weather event unfolds.
