HOUSTON, TEXAS — Potential Tropical Cyclone 1 is battling significant wind shear and land interaction Wednesday morning as morning satellite imagery shows deep convection being pushed well east of the low pressure center, leaving the system displaced and struggling to organize as heavy rain and possible storms continue moving toward the upper Texas Gulf Coast.
Morning Satellite Shows Deep Convection Displaced Far East of Center
Wednesday morning satellite imagery from Weathernerds.org shows PTC 1 with its low pressure center marked by a red X positioned over or near the Texas coast, while the heaviest deep convection shown in dark red and white is pushed well to the east and northeast of the center. This displacement of convection away from the low is a classic signal of wind shear tearing the system apart and preventing organized tropical development.
The shear analysis panel shows strong eastward-directed wind shear across the system, consistent with the convection being stripped away from the circulation center and pushed toward the northwestern Gulf of Mexico coastline.
System Running Out of Time to Organize Over Water
Forecasters are noting that time is not on this system’s side, with the low pressure center now close to or over land while wind shear continues to inhibit organization. The combination of land interaction and strong shear significantly reduces the probability of further tropical development for PTC 1 at this stage.
Despite the organizational struggles, the heavy convection associated with the system continues to produce significant rainfall across portions of the Texas coast.
Heavy Rain and Possible Storms Still Heading for Upper Gulf Coast
Regardless of tropical development, the heavy convective rainfall associated with PTC 1 is still expected to impact the upper Texas Gulf Coast as the system arrives. Possible storms along the upper Gulf are also anticipated when the convection reaches the coastline, maintaining a weather threat for Houston, Beaumont, and surrounding communities even without tropical organization.
Residents along the upper Texas Gulf Coast should continue monitoring rainfall and storm potential through Wednesday regardless of the system’s tropical status.
