KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — Heavy thunderstorms are actively tracking across eastern Kansas into western Missouri this Sunday morning, bringing intense lightning, booming thunder, and very heavy rainfall that is already raising serious flooding concerns across the region.
Six Lines of Thunderstorms Merging Into Large Rain Area Across the Region
Six separate lines of thunderstorms have been forming and merging into one large area of heavy rain stretching across eastern Kansas and into western Missouri. Radar imagery shows intense storm cores concentrated near Manhattan, Marysville, Saint Joseph, Leavenworth, Atchison, and Kansas City, with the heaviest activity tracking northeast. The storm system is producing widespread lightning strikes across the entire affected corridor simultaneously.
Rainfall Totals of 2 to 3 Inches Possible with Flooding Already Likely
Rainfall accumulations of 2 to 3 inches are possible in spots as the heavy storm clusters continue to move through the region. Flooding is considered likely across flood-prone areas, with particular concern near creeks and low-lying waterways that may briefly become raging rivers under the intense rainfall rates. Residents near Ottawa, Emporia, Falls City, and Savannah should remain alert to rapidly changing water levels throughout the morning.
Areas From Manhattan to Kansas City Under Active Threat Right Now
The radar shows the most intense storm cores currently impacting a broad zone from Manhattan and Emporia in central Kansas northeast through Ottawa, Leavenworth, and into the Kansas City metro. Surrounding communities including Beatrice, Auburn, Maryville, and Saint Joseph are also within the active storm corridor. The threat is ongoing and conditions may continue to deteriorate through the morning hours.
Residents Urged to Avoid Flood Prone Areas and Low Water Crossings
With flooding already likely across flood-prone zones and near creek beds, residents throughout eastern Kansas and western Missouri should avoid unnecessary travel through low-lying areas and never attempt to cross flooded roadways or water crossings this morning.
