True, who had already endured months of medical complications following open-heart surgery in 2021, was scheduled for another procedure in January 2022. As he prepared for surgery, hospital staff quickly realized he did not have a parent or guardian by his side.

His regular caseworker, who would normally accompany him to medical appointments, was unable to attend after testing positive for COVID-19.
