CENTRAL TEXAS — A dangerous meso low pressure system spinning near Waco is causing widespread severe weather across central Texas as of 9 PM Sunday, with 60 mph wind gusts wrapping around the system and radar estimates showing 3.53 inches of rainfall already recorded on the east side of Gatesville. Minor flooding is likely up and down the Interstate 35 corridor during the next few hours as rain continues falling over the same areas repeatedly.
Meso Low Causing Multiple Hazards
The meso low pressure system spinning near Waco is generating a complex and multi-hazard severe weather situation across the region. Strong winds up to 60 mph are wrapping around the system in all directions, creating widespread wind damage potential across communities surrounding the low pressure center near Waco, Gatesville, and Hewitt.
The continuous rainfall over the same areas is the second major concern, with radar accumulation data showing 3.53 inches already recorded near Gatesville since tracking began at 12:23 PM Sunday. This rainfall is saturating the ground and creating rising water concerns along low lying areas and roadways throughout the region.
Flooding Risk Along I-35 Corridor
Minor flooding is considered likely along the Interstate 35 corridor during the next few hours as the meso low continues spinning and funneling heavy rainfall over already saturated ground. Communities from Waco south through Temple, Killeen, Georgetown, Round Rock, and toward Austin all sit within the flooding concern zone as water levels rise across the region Sunday night.
Drivers along Interstate 35 are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways during the overnight hours as water depths can be deceiving and conditions can change rapidly.
Severe Threat Easing for Some Areas
The good news as of the 9 PM radar update is that the severe weather threat is coming down for Waco, Temple, and Killeen. However the threat remains active for areas south toward Austin and east toward Bryan and College Station, where hail and strong winds remain the primary hazards as the storm system continues pushing through the region Sunday night.
