CARROLLTON, TEXAS — A disturbing early-morning scene unfolded inside a Texas apartment when police say a newlywed husband admitted to killing his wife, claiming he felt “obligated” to do it.
Officers with the Carrollton Police Department responded to a disturbance call around 4:40 a.m. on March 18. When they entered the apartment, they discovered a gruesome scene that would quickly turn into a murder investigation.
What Officers Found Inside the Apartment
According to police, 23-year-old Francisco Mendez-Marin was inside the apartment covered in blood when officers arrived. Another unidentified individual was also present.
Nearby, officers found 20-year-old Karla Rangel, his wife of less than a month, lying unresponsive with a severe wound to her neck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators also recovered a blood-covered pocketknife believed to have been used in the attack.
Husband’s Statements to Police
Police say Mendez-Marin initially told officers that he “didn’t do anything bad.” However, body camera footage later captured him making a chilling admission in Spanish.
“I was obligated to do it,” he reportedly said, according to the affidavit.
That statement became a central part of the case as officers worked to understand what led to such a violent act so soon after the couple’s marriage.
A Marriage That Lasted Less Than a Month
Authorities confirmed that the couple had been married on February 26, just weeks before the killing. Officers located a marriage license inside the apartment, verifying how recent the union was.
